Gil Grimmett Sculptor Ceramic Artist Baltimore

Bio

Gil began sculpting with basic natural materials: mud, clay, sand, branches, leaves, snow and ice. His formal study of ceramics began at Hampton University under the Ghanaian ceramist, Kwabene Ampofo-Anti. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in art history with a focus on the arts of Africa and the art of Africans in the diaspora while taking courses in ceramics each semester during his attendance there.

From 2002 to 2008, while living in Japan, Gil taught English and formally studied Japanese culture. He worked out of a studio at the Sacred Heart School in Tokyo and learned the art of crafting teacups at Suehachi Kaku Studio in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Upon returning to the US in 2008, Gil became a member at Clayworks on Columbia in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY while completing his Masters in Education at Bank Street College. His sculpture work from this period was informed by the social studies curriculum he taught to his young students. His “Soldiers of Justice” series, which depicted the busts of abolitionists appeared in several shows in New York and New Jersey.

Today, Gil lives and works in Baltimore, MD. He is a member of the Potters Guild of Baltimore where he teaches a figurative sculpture class.
